RIP Floppy disks

Sony announced today they are finally ceasing production of the floppy disk. Now, if you’re like me, you assumed this happened about 10 years ago. However, apparently, Sony sold 12 million of these things in Japan just last year.

If you show one of these things to anybody under the age of 15, they aren’t going to have a clue in hell what it is. Apple was the first computer to discontinue use of the floppy, and that was all the way back in 1999. And people say they aren’t visionaries?
I do have fond memories of using these things. In elementary school we each got one to put all of our word documents on. As in the picture above, they only held about 1.5 MB of data – which by today’s comparison is roughly 1 single mp3.
Yup, we have come a long way in the past 10 years, and soon enough CD’s will be extinct as well.
Rest in peace, Mr. Floppy Disk.
