This kid was supposed to fight last weekend at UFC 111, until a CAT scan revealed possible brain complications, and he was quickly pulled from the card. It was an issue UFC owner Dana White called “career-threatening, if not career-ending.”
Terrible news for Mixed Martial Arts fans, because this dude is good. He’s beat the who’s-who, aside from the pound for pound best, Georges St-Pierre, and at 26 years old he was staring retirement in the face.
So what happens next?
Alves undergoes an 8-hour brain surgery that separated an artery from a vein in his brain. The doctors called this a “minor procedure” but I’m sorry, there is NO minor brain surgery.
When he wakes up, literally the first words out of his mouth were “When can I train again?”
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!
There’s baseball players that will fracture their finger and call it a career. Even if you hate the sport of MMA, you can’t not respect the fight, determination and heart of Thiago Alves.
See you in the cage soon, man.
